Five people were killed and multiple others were “gravely” injured Thursday when a gunman opened fire at the office of a newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland, authorities said at a press conference.
The shooting occurred at the offices ofThe Capital Gazette, an Annapolis police spokesperson tells PEOPLE.
The lone suspect was identified only as a white male, and he is in custody, authorities said. He is not cooperating with investigators: He has refused to identify himself and has no identification on him, and police have no information about his motive.
Police were called at about 3:15 p.m.. They confronted the suspect within 60 to 90 seconds, authorities said, and apprehended the suspect without exchanging gunfire.
Phil Davis, a reporter withThe Capital Gazette,wrote on Twitter, “Gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees. Can’t say much more and don’t want to declare anyone dead, but it’s bad.”
Davisalso tweeted, “There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you’re under your desk and then hear the gunman reload.”

The Capital Gazettereported on the shootingin its offices. Davis is quoted as saying he and other employees hid under their desks during the shooting until the gunshots stopped.
“I don’t know why. I don’t know why he stopped,” Davis said, who added that police surrounded the shooter.

Gov. Larry Hogan, on Twitter, wrote, “Absolutely devastated to learn of this tragedy in Annapolis.”
Annapolis is the capital of Maryland and the county seat of Anne Arundel County. Its population is about 40,000.
