A Walking City is not a young approximation . Ron Herron firstproposedhis utopian - inflect idea of cities that roam the the orb in 1964 . Malka ’s vision is simultaneously an industrial metropolis with houses , schools , eatery , Mungo Park , and a farm that produces 20 million tons of crops per year . Its “ bread basket ” is the desert underneath the city . The caterpillar treads — inspired by the political machine NASA uses to channelise rockets — also doubled as agricultural substructure . Asdesignboomexplains , the first span of treads treat the land , and the rear unity inject urine , fertilizer and seeds .
The idea , however fantastic , is that over the old age the land underneath would progress through the level of ecological successiveness , make the leap from desert to shrub to Tree .
