Yenni made her decision as her cousins slithered through the grass like log snakes , hem the wight in from all sides .
They would hate her for this .
She pulled DOE through her focus rune — a dance band of white painted across her eyes — and find its warm tingle on her tegument as it focalize her vision . forward the n’ne shimmered in the sunlight , the black hair of its haunches flash blue , then unripe , then gold . It graze , its graceful neck bow forth and its marvelous horns slew and shine like blackwood . Four long legs , suited to snip sprints , disappeared into the tall sens . Such a gorgeous animal . Small admiration her full cousin wanted to sputter it , put its school principal on display , and make a ness of its skin .
But n’ne were highly reasoning . It was rare to see more than one or two at a prison term , and the scholars theorized that they sacrificed themselves to draw predatory animal aside from the principal ruck . In fact , Yenni was sure it knew they were there . At any moment it would draw on ach’e , the divine vim that ran through all things , and put on a magical fit of pep pill to flutter away . She planned to avail it escape .
Yenni pick up a bird trill , high and sweet , and make out it as the signaling that one of her cousin-german , or perhaps her younger brother , was in place . Another birdie call , and another . They would not attack with fervency — that would singe the tool ’s hide . No , they would furrow the pitiable affair this room and that until they could catch it , and then someone would crack its neck with their bare hands . If she let them .
Yenni moved through the grass clumsily , causing it to rock and throb around her . The organisation was still uncompleted .
Run , she thought desperately .
As if it had heard her , the animal have off , its legs glow with ach’e as it galloped through the tall skunk . Yenni irrupt the f number runes on her thighs and calves , relishing the intimate warmth of zip feed through her , and shot after it . Two of her cousins jump up out of the eatage . “ Weh ! Weh ! ” they shouted , curl their sleeve . The n’ne zipped right , where her immature buddy , Jumi , kept pace , his runes blazing blue - white on his non-white legs . He dive , blazonry wide to tackle the n’ne , but it slipped free and left him tumbling . Yenni grin , until she realized the wight now run right at her . If she frighten off it , it would twist tail and channelise flat for her cousin Ade - Ige . He would no doubt catch it and then . . .
Yenni sprang out of the path of the runaway n’ne , flattening herself to the grass . The ground vacillate as it thunder by and she hear her full cousin allow out a frustrated curse .
“ Mothers and Fathers ! It ’s escape into the forest , we ’ll never find it now ! ”
Standing , Yenni brush herself off while mentally tense up against the tirade to make out . She did find a little thrust of guilt for ruining the hunt , but it was her last trip for a long while to amount , and she refused to taint the store — the pale Mary Jane of the plain against the subdued blue of the sky — with the tang of the beautiful animal ’s carmine parentage .
When Yenni looked up , the others — all eight of them — stand across from her with their eyes glitter in charge under their blank focus runes .
“ Why did n’t you chase it toward us ? ” Ade - Ige demanded . Yenni stood straighter , raising her mentum to meet his gaze , say nothing . But her cousin was too far expire in his irritation to yield her proper respect .
“ You let it escape on purpose , did n’t you ? Probably due to some anserine notion of it being too pretty to kill . ” He threw up his hands . “ This is why I dislike hunting with charwoman ! ” He kicked at the grass like a petulant child .
“ Ah ! It was n’t me who lease it escape ! ” cry Ade - Ige ’s young sister . She looked like a feminine version of him , right down to the fire in her eyes . “ Do n’t chunk us together ! ” A second later she sent Yenni a scared glance before deposit her gaze on the ground .
Yenni huffed . It was one affair to bring down a Sus scrofa for a spread or defend a village from a face pack of emboldened hyenas , but rare and intelligent creatures — especially those that could channel ach’e — had always been Yenni ’s failing . Though she loved to encounter such animals in the natural state , to stalk and take them , she was loathe to kill them . “ Yes , I found it beautiful , as did you , which is why you wanted to capture it . ”
“ And now it ’s survive ! ” Ade - Ige shouted . “ I do n’t know who you think you are ! ”
Her temper flared hot in her face . “ I am Yenni Aja - Nifemi ka Yirba , and you would do well to remember that ! ”
Ade - Ige and the others crouch their read/write head , all except her brother , and Yenni winced . She ’d promised herself she would use her prowess as a tracker , not her claim , to gain their respect . But pigheaded Ade - Ige always got under her hide .
“ Let ’s repay , ” she said , and before anyone could answer , she turned and rend ach’e through her speed runes , dashing toward the white firm of the city and the gleam atomic number 79 palace perched on the top of the hill .
