Halle Baileyis thankful for her strong support system, which includes her parents, Courtney and Doug Bailey.
The singer and actor rose to fame as part of the musical duoChloe x Hallewith her older sister Chloe Bailey. More recently, Halle has landed major film roles like Ariel in the 2023 live-action remake ofThe Little Mermaidand Nettie in the upcoming remake of the 1985 drama filmThe Color Purple.
The duo gained attention for their YouTube covers and were eventually signed toBeyoncé’s record label Parkwood Entertainment.
Behind the scenes, Doug worked as a stockbroker and he took the reins as Halle and Chloe’s manager when they were first coming up. Though neither had any prior connections to the entertainment industry, both parents nurtured Halle’s apparent natural talent and supported her pursuits.
“Sometimes it’s been hard for us to believe in ourselves, but we have such a great support system in our parents and Beyoncé, who’s always letting us know to trust our art and our instincts,” Halle toldTIMEin 2018.

In addition to her sister, Chloe, Halle has an older sister, Ski, and a younger brother, Branson.
Ski (pronounced “sky”) was often behind the camera when her sisters were filming their YouTube covers.
“We burned [the song] on a CD, put it in our stereo, andour older sister was behind the tripod,” Chloe told PEOPLE in 2023. “She would press ‘play’ with her toe as she was paying attention to the camera.”

During a May 2023 appearance onLive with Kelly and Mark, Halle addressed the glaring similarity between her andHalle Berry’s names.
She continued, “And they ultimately decided Halle, and it’s very similar to Halle Berry. But there’s no one else I would rather have a similar name to ‘cause she’s so cool.”
They supported Halle’s early acting and musical pursuits

From a young age, Halle’s parents could see that both she and Chloe had talent and made efforts to nurture their potential.
Courtney was largely responsible for her daughters’ foray into acting.
“Our mom would always have the camera in our face, and she realised we were children with a lot of personality who [liked to] perform,” Halle said in a 2020 interview withThe Guardian. “She was like: ‘My children are talented, what can I do?’ So we got into the acting industry, we’d do commercials for Gap and little things.”
Doug, on the other hand, helped Halle hone her musical talent despite his lack of experience. “He tries to sing around the house but he’s tone deaf,” Chloe said, adding that he helped his daughters Google information about songwriting while they looked up instrument tutorials.
They influenced her music taste

Courtney and Doug played a major role in the kind of music Halle grew to love and eventually, create for herself.
She continued, “But we were a musical family in the sense that my parents were always playing great music for us: Jill Scott,Janelle Monáeand OutKast, Marsha Ambrosius andErykah Badu. All the deep R&B, soul, bluesy music was what we grew up hearing.”
They moved their family to L.A. for their daughters’ careers

In 2012, Courtney and Doug moved their family across the U.S. from Atlanta to L.A. to help their kids earn better opportunities.
“We knew that being out here was definitely better for the music scene,” Halle said in a 2018 interview with TIME. “Our mom and dad made the decision to move us with our family. We instantly fell in love; the sun was shining. It makes you a happier person.”
Chloe added that while the sisters started performing around Atlanta, the change in scenery was ultimately necessary. “It was fun, but deep in our hearts we always knew it was something we wanted to take seriously,” she said.
Doug was Halle’s manager in the beginning

At the time, Beyoncé had recently featured Chloe x Halle as her opening act on the European leg of her Formation Tour. Doug said the “Single Ladies” singer had “creative input on the record.”
Halle drew on her relationship with Doug for her role inThe Little Mermaid

“I would always talk about [how] my dad is like a mirror of King Triton; he’s always been so overprotective of my sister and I,” she said. “That’s one of the things that we love about him — the way he loves."
Halle continued, “When I had scenes with Javier, I just pulled from my experience with my own father: how deep that love is, and how strong and protective they get.”

After moving to L.A. with her family 11 years prior, Halle moved out of her parents’ home and into her own apartment once she wrapped filming onThe Little Mermaid.
In an interview withGlamourin 2023, the star shared that she actually lived in the same building as Chloe.
“It’s nice because we’re neighbors and she’s always there when I need her, but we have our own space,” Halle said.
