Friday night ’s Supernatural , “ Time After Time ” was fundamentally a giant excuse for Dean to clothe up in a forties courting and spout character reference to The Untouchables . That ’s correct – it was another time travel episode , which bring in American account according to Supernatural up into the twentieth century . Guess who was a Hunter in the forties ? You ’ll find out , though it might make you groan – but no more than you ’ll already be groan over the anime smut jokes .

Spoilers ahead !

I be intimate that Supernatural not only has its own substitute interpretation of Judeo - Christian legend , but an alternate version of genuine - life U.S. history too . We ’ve already learned that Sam Colt , inventor of the famed pistol , was a mysterious Hunter who craft a special handgun so powerful it could bring down Lucifer himself ( though woefully it did n’t ) . We also know there ’s an substitute future where Sarah Palin becomes president and the existence ends . And now , filling in a crucial gap , this episode supplies us with an alternate chronicle of rabble - fall apart Cleveland cop Eliot Ness . Turns out that Ness had a secret career as a hard - prick Hunter , who got into the aliveness after finding out that vampires were turn people in Ohio .

The solitariness of the unworshipped godWe find all this out when Sheriff Mills calls Sam to tell him that mummified bodies are turning up in Cleveland . Turns out we ’re divvy up with one of those “ god who used to be worship but now has almost zero followers and therefore almost zero power ” deal . The god in question is Chronos , played tastefully by Jason Dohring ( Logan from Veronica Mars ) . Most of the sentence Chronos jump out around in prison term , but if he want to learn where he extend , he needs three human sacrifices to commence his timey wimey motors . The mummified bodies are what he leaves behind .

The twist in all this is that somehow Chronos managed to find a woman he loved , in 1944 . Every time he ’s yanked out from that year , he has to draw the life story out of three people to get back . It just so find that his latest victims are in 2012 . When Dean strain to cease him from murdering his last victim , Dean is swept back in meter with Chronos . He find out himself on a 1940s street , gun in hand , and is immediately whisk to the police station where he meets Eliot Ness . Then two of them track down Chronos , while Sam and Mills attempt to figure out how to convey Dean back to the time to come .

I ’m sorry , but there were too many references in this episodeOK look – I do n’t mind twat references . In fact , I think one of the many things we all love about this show is the way the composition is twine with pop acculturation jokes . But “ Time After Time ” depart too far . First , there was the on-going joke about Dean watching anime , or what Sam calls “ smutty cartoons . ” At least , Dean used to find out anime , but now all he does is take stories online about drumhead Leviathan Dick Roman . “ You gon na look at more Zanzibar copal or are you strictly into Dick now ? ” Sam asks . Alright , that was actually risible . Hur hur .

To clarify my problem with these book of facts : I do n’t think they ’re bad per se , but their comprehension in the chronicle felt rote and mechanical . Occasionally I feel like the writers could n’t come up with funny dialogue , so they bank on these reference instead . Which often does work on this show , but feel too wedge in this instalment , specially after so many callbacks to the same pop culture sources .

A few nerveless things about 1944

1 . In the mid - twentieth C , apparently the Bobby - esque Hunter is a grumpy , super knowledgable older cleaning woman who gave me powerful nostalgia feelings for the Ida robot in Middleman ( I recognize – another reference ) . Also , I have to admit that Eliot Ness as a drunken Hunter is just plain cool , specially when he tells Dean to shut up about his inner unhappiness , which is always good advice . We know he ’ll get to serve his feelings with Sam afterward , anyway .

2 . Any excuse to see Logan again is hunky-dory with me .

3 . The scene where Sam and Mills are race against time to set up their prison term - jump spell while Dean and Ness are trying to wipe out Chronos is passing well done , with good pacing and a gravid capper bit . After Sam stabs Chronos , he differentiate the boys that he ’s catch their future and it ’s “ covered with slurred dim ooze . ” He append , “ They ’re everywhere – enjoy oblivion . ”

And now it ’s fourth dimension for us to treat our impression
