This remarkable succession of images was photograph last calendar month by photographerLeRoy Zimmerman . The images were captured last month over the ( surprisingly farsighted ) course of thirty minutes , and portray roughly 500 km of aurora unfurling across a 150 - academic degree upright stretch of subarctic vault of heaven . Sez Zimmerman : “ I have never seen an alive sunup hitch in one blank space for so long , ever ! ”

Zimmerman describes enchant the display over at The World At Night :

It was a sensational and warm evening . It would have been very easy to miss this show if my timing start out out was off by just 15 minutes or so . catch some aurora showing some pink on my LiveAurora iPhone app , so I decided I well get out and take a look . Luckily here is a shooting spot about 5 minutes from my cabin that I could get to apace , and when I got there I saw an more or less ‘ faint ’ band coming up from the western horizon and thinly pass around overhead . I take a color catch shoot out to the horizon ( just a quick fix hand held hit to check color ) and saw that faint band was really pink / Marxist .
I immediately set up and depart shooting out towards the horizon and noticed that is was start to build and move overhead . Took the camera off the tripod ( quick release ) and take another color grab shoot overhead , and saw that was red as well . I instantly manoeuver the camera straight up on the tripod and commence fool . And the aurora begin putting on an overhead show ! ! So just keep inject , and shot , and shooting . keep thinking it surely had to begin winding down , or that the aurora band would move to another part of the sky , but the set did NOT move and the show did not contain , it just stayed in place and kept exchange and changing . So I kept scud the same dawn for 25 minutes , admit a photo every 3 seconds , before it finally lull down and began to fade aside . I have never seen an participating aurora stay in one position for so long , ever ! And that single arc was the ONLY aurora in the sky ! accept 500 shots without ever moving the television camera once ! I could not trust what I had just seen and filmed ! A invaluable evening for certain .
Simply sensational . I ’ve never had the good lot to witness the Northern Lights in person , but it ’s image like these that always stoke the fire of my extreme - parallel of latitude wanderlust . A large thanks to LeRoy for admit us to feature his work .
