Both Isaac Asimov ’s Foundation novel and Frank Herbert ’s Dune books conceive of empire in space . But everything we acknowledge about technological change and maturation suggests that an empire could never spur rapid enough technical developing to make it in space , argues an article in Time Magazine .
write in Time , Southern Utah University political economy prof David Berri argues there are two different sort of societies — extractive unity , where a handful of rulers take wealth from the eternal sleep of the population , and inclusive ones , which are more equal . Extractive societies actively discourage technological change “ since alteration jeopardise the power of the elite . ” And since technological change is the master driver of economic growth , Berri debate there was essentially no economic ontogenesis “ for almost all of human chronicle . ” None . ( What about population outgrowth , though ? )
So Berri argues that an “ Empire ” or an aristocracy as depicted in Herbert or Asimov is incongruous with space conquest :

How could the future be overshadow by an “ empire ” ? Empire are generally establish on extractive institutions ; with significant resources generated by members of the fellowship being claimed by the Emperor / Empress and his / her ally ( this is expressed in Herbert ’s Dune ) . But , such society would not generally advertise the technological alteration necessary to make up and join zillion of planets . Perhaps the introductory economics behind the stories tell in many works of skill fable is n’t quite right-hand …
economic expert Robert Fogel captured in one graph how applied science has only suddenly begun to alter at a rapid pace . As Fogel mark , for centuries citizenry made no advances with respect to wide-eyed devices like a plow . But since 1900 , we have gone from the design of a basic airplane developed by the Wright comrade to land on the moon . Or – in more recent news – the iPhone many masses enjoy today would have cost $ 3.6 million with the engineering uncommitted just 20 years ago . Such speedy technological variety come about when you switch people ’s motivator .
It ’s an intriguing argumentation , although probably leans a small too intemperately on some broad generality . ( And did n’t the Roman Empire make some pretty noteworthy technological advances ? ) The whole thing is definitely deserving hold in out .

Update : Added a question Deutschmark to the headline , since lots of people are pointing out very sound reasons why this thesis is middling confutable . [ Time ]
