Aesthetically , Reid enunciate she has the most affinity with SF through steampunk :
I ’ve always been drawn to the past , but since I have only my sensing to go by when depicting even the true stories , the solvent will always be middling fictional . Of course that ’s partly what science fable is , whether it be about the past tense or the future , it ’s an interpretation … I ca n’t say that my influence are take skill fiction in the classic signified . Paintings from the Renaissance , Art Nouveau , Max Ernst , and Joseph Cornell are inspirational . Vintage anatomical / biological example , mechanical diagrams , widget , alchemy and Victorian portraits also act into it . Stories like The Picture of Dorian Grey , or story of time travel , touch stories , caption , and old radio show . I ’m just as regulate by odd family line account that seem to arise every so often as well .
Retro technology plays a prominent function in Reid ’s work :

I begin interpreting late 19th and early 20th Century technology in my picture , maybe as a result of our own technical evolution . Ironically , as the Industrial Age comes to an end , and the Technology Age get , subconsciously , multitude seem to be drawn back to the other turn of the century . In esteem to modern technology , you could look at it from the compass point of view that it will be someone else ’s eccentric divine guidance in the futurity . I have a bit of a love / hate matter going on with the modernistic universe actually . Mentally and visually , I ’m thread to the past , but because of modern technology , not only am I capable to apply a computing equipment as a creature for commercial oeuvre , but also I ’m able to lie out the preliminary degree for paintings , although I still use classical method ( traditional gesso , egg tempera , crude oil ) to execute them .
Some of her inspiration comes from her upbringing . Her father was a escape technologist “ for the RCAF , then was shot down and became a prisoner of war for the last six month of WWII , ” then became a mechanical engineer . Reid ’s mother served as a nurse in London during the Blitz . She explains :
citizenry of that generation lean to not talk much about dark , uncomfortable subjects , although every so often I would get a story out of nowhere . My dad was also a bit eccentric , so you could never be quite certain what he was up to . He ’d have all these strange projects on the go like a twenty-four hours of the Dead skull hang in a macramé flora hanger ( for Platonism , he glued his own hair on it ) , and often he ’d let in me , his baffled daughter , in the process . There was also the ‘ satellite amongst the Stars ’ wall art - I should add that the satellite was a big piece of driftwood , the wiz were Christmas lights that he wired through the other side of the wall and the atmosphere was benighted brown imitation wood paneling . In his workshop you ’d often get a line him mussitate and swearing , whether he was hammering , sawing , or drafting . He ’d also pull up stakes odd little notes everywhere — to me , my mum , but mostly to himself .

Recently , Reid had a show at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in LA . Soon , she will finish up a farseeing running animated series with a.k.a . Cartoon Inc. in Vancouver . See more inon Bonni Reid ’s gallery .
