Space is unrelenting in its expanse and magnificence ; in the observable universe alone we ’ve imaged jillion of objects , but so many rest unexamined . Over the last 10 years , the Dark Energy Camera alone has imaged about 2.5 billion objects , such as galaxy , stars , nanus satellite , and supernovae , the explosive deaths of stars .
A gravid part of the camera ’s work is theDark Energy Survey , a project that observes supernova and galaxies to quantify changes in dark Energy Department , the unknown 70 % of the universe of discourse that drives its expansion .
The Dark Energy Camera is the 570 - megapixel cat’s-paw that is key to the resume , but it also is used for separate observance from time to time , gather sparkle in visible and infrared wavelengths . Here are 15 images snapped by the camera that show off its remarkable vision .
