Many new studiesare complicating our reason of the part cholesterin play in heart disease . And last month , a mathematical group of researchers published the results of a study show that what you thought you do it about “ bad ” cholesterin is probably wrong — or at least far too simplistic .

Over at KQED , Liza Gross has the news report :

Most of us make love that too much cholesterol promotes centre disease . And many be intimate that cholesterol amount in good and spoiled forms . “ Bad ” ( depleted - density lipoprotein , or LDL ) cholesterin clogs the arterial blood vessel that pump origin to the heart and feed the brain , raising the risk of infection of heart attack and stroke . “ Good ” ( gamy - density lipoprotein , or HDL ) cholesterin removes excess cholesterin and fatness from the bloodstream , keeping arteria healthy .
But a lilliputian noesis can be a unsafe thing : this unspoilt versus unsound scenario offers a simplistic view of cholesterin ’s role in heart disease .
Doctors valuate cardiac health with routine ancestry tests that reckon LDL and HDL cholesterol grade along with entire cholesterin and triglycerides . But cholesterol is just one component of the lipoprotein particles ( spherical balls made of protein and other lipoid ) that transport the water - phobic molecules through the blood . Most blood tests reflect how much cholesterin the particles carry but do n’t provide any information about the particles themselves .

“ But it all starts with the particle , ” says Ronald Krauss , senior scientist and director of Atherosclerosis Research at Children ’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute . “ The LDL particles go into the artery wall and carry the cholesterin with them . So we see the cholesterol in the brass but it ’s the particle concentration and the number of particles that really determine the appendage . ”
small LDL particles take less cholesterol than larger LDL mote , yet it ’s the smaller particles that are most strongly associated with heart disease risk .
That ’s because smaller mote are more likely to glom on to arteria walls and do so more often because they circularize in the blood longer . Once they get stuck , they undergo chemic changes that make them more toxic to arterial blood vessel .

So if you have mostly small-scale LDL particles , your cholesterol levels could be normal , but you may still be at risk for spunk disease , Krauss says . “ It turns the cholesterin story upside down . ”
Krauss and his co-worker point out that the connection between small LDL particle and fondness disease is “ rock substantial . ” And void impregnate blubber does n’t help . Instead , we require to think to avoid sugars .
More evidence that sweetened food and beverages are killing you

“ Taking away bollock and milk has virtually no effect on the bad guys , ” Krass tell KQED . “ But you could make a really big advance if you shorten the loot out . ”
