Director Marc Webb offers some reassurances that this movie wo n’t go overboard with the origin history stuff we ’ve all ascertain before , as well as detail how Peter is different this meter around :

That ’s something from the comic strip that I ’ve always been really a fan of . Humor ’s a tricky matter because it ’s always very subjective . Everything in this movie — the first domino , is Peter getting left behind by his parent . I think to myself , “ What does that do to somebody ? How does that change your opinion of the world ? ” To me , that creates a little bit of a level of suspicion . It ’s a savage matter to have happen to you . That ’s , to me , where he gets that outsider status . Then there ’s a irony that comes from that and a quippiness . I mean you guys have seen some of the car stealer scene where that attitude come out . That , to me , is mother from this chip on his shoulder . He ’s a little spot tight . He ’s a footling bit snarky , but that ’s an attitude that we can all understand and relate to . I think it come from a material literal place . That was fun to explore the liquid body substance , but my point is that the humor come from a very human , real , worked up place . It ’s not just slap on .
He also explains some of his casting conclusion for the supporting characters , specifically Denis Leary as Captain George Stacy and Sally Field as Aunt May :
Denis play the bureau figure that he has made fun of for his entire career . When you shake off someone like Sally , they issue forth with a sealed level of knowingness and real , genuine affection , which I guess , for Aunt May , is an incredibly important matter to have . We all love Aunt May , but I wanted to create a tension between Aunt May and Peter because , once again , what is the reality of the spot ? God , I wish I could show you some conniption , but I do n’t have them with me . I thought , what would happen if you were someone who was in bearing of taking tending of a kid who has had a lot of tragedy in his life and he expire out late at night and come back and he ’s f—-ed up ? You would be relate . If he ’s grow bruises on his case , what happen in that moment ? That can make some tensity , but you desire there to be honey there and that is what someone like Sally Field gives . The other thing about Denis Leary is that we all confide Denis Leary . He ’s got this attitude , but we love him . In this movie he place pressure on Peter Parker . He ’s on Spider - Man ’s font . But you understand him . Good drama come from compete idea of what ’s unspoilt , correct ? multitude have different theme on what that is , but if you put that together and they collide there is an honest dispute in opinion . Then there ’s something really interesting that encounter there . I wanted to explore that as much as possible .
