Clear 4G: A Love Story

This photograph was taken at the SFMTA Customer Service Center , the seventh grade of bureaucratic hell . I was lick there , but I do n’t cultivate there , feel me ? I was usingClear’sMobile USB WiMax Adapter . Mobile connection dongle are n’t particularly new ; hell , 4 G mobile adapters are n’t even new . But six months ago the technology was straightforward - up nascent , barely worth indue in unless you lived in one of the few grocery store where 4 thou reporting existed . Well , I ’ve been on Clear for more than half a year now , and things have changed dramatically .

San Francisco . New York . Las Vegas . Chicago . Minneapolis . Los Angeles . Washington . Maryland . Virginia . There ’s probably more . I ’ve take this thing all over cosmos and mostly enjoyed broadband - level speeds . My data point even soared above the foul , CES - clotted airwaves of Las Vegas . I ’ve portion out the connection with friends in airports , and used it as a supplement to the pitiful drivel of morsel that evanesce for WiFi at my mother ’s sign of the zodiac . ( Sorry ma , it ’s not personal ! ) Even now , stuffed in a bunker - walled municipal building , I have enough bandwidth — though I ’ve been busted down to 3G — to upload images .

Like any new - ish technology , Clear is n’t perfect . The connection is n’t 100 - percentage mature yet — you’re somewhat much swot up in the northerly flyover states , for example . I could n’t get a 4 G signal in Phoenix or Scottsdale , either . And the dongle Cuts the battery life of my Macbook Pro in half and catch really hot . The software can get a little cranky if you keep out your notebook computer without quitting first , too , causeing the Clear Connection Manager to fall up for a few hour before reconnect .

But I ’m reasonably all right with it , because , frankly , I ’m in love . And an imperfectness in someone you love does n’t make him or her imperfect ; it stool them substantial . This adaptor has stand by me and done its good wherever I ’ve take it . Mostly , it knock the bandwidth orchis out of the frickin park . It even attempted ( limply ) to grab a signal in England , when I — flight - worn and dazed — plug away in without realizing that I was in a country where Clear ’s 4 G was a strange language . The poor affair just could n’t speak to the local tower .
