Yesterday we got our first sense of taste of new footage from Neill Blomkamp ’s District 9 follow - up , Elysium . These impudently film scene have n’t even been edited and polished — but already they show off an action - compact tale of a dire mankind trapped in a dismal , broken slum whose only salvation is a space station that knows no poorness or disease .

Blomkamp was full of nervous energy as he introduced his Elysium reel , saying that there ’s nothing quite as good as showing footage at Comic Con , because it ’s extend directly out to the fans . And this was a peculiarly unstained bobbin , with rough placeholders resist in for many of the ocular effects . Even so , there is a lot to be excited about . He ’s assure that he can get to Elysium if he performs one particular job : hijacking an Elysium occupier ( William Fichtner ) and downloading the selective information from this kingpin ’s mental capacity into his own brain . To this remnant , Max has various engineering science implant in his trunk , include those large old exo - weapon that allow Max to use some passably muscular firearms .
Max and his confederate successfully burglarize the information , but it twist out that ’s just the beginning . shortly , he ’s being hunted down by a gunman - toting Elysium agent ( District 9 ’s Sharlto Copley ) . Max learns the information he ’s downloaded could potentially override Elysium ’s systems , and before long he ’s on his path to the legendary space post . Meanwhile , Secretary Rhodes ( Jodie Foster ) will stop at nothing to protect the wealthy sanctuary . And Max is n’t the only one with a heroic want to chitchat Elysium ’s healing technological shores .
Although the shot of Elysium itself were unfinished , these shooter gave us plenty of great worldbuilding Earthside . Blomkamp filmed the picture in Mexico City , in the humanity ’s second largest dump , so all the grime you ’ll see will be very actual . The shining automatawe envision earlier this week in the concept artexist in parole government agency , too , but they ’re filthy and graffitied . The AI is rough , and if you give out to comport in a serene manner , it will offer you one of a routine of colorful pills . Plus , the casual way Fichtner ’s type orders a droid to kill Max and his compatriots shows how this incredible divide between rich and miserable means that the extremist - rich just read the poor as man .

Damon says that , when Blomkamp ab initio pitched him the project , he gave Damon a drawn-out graphic novel sketch the world of Elysium , plus freestanding Koran detailing the moving picture ’s vehicle and weapons .
