In 1921 , Dr. Gustav Luchy , a Swiss scientist , and the Chevalier Pini , an inventor , collaborated on devising a machine to capture the Antarctic . They needed a model on which to free-base their conception — something that sheltered its crew , but was more maneuverable than a train or car . So of course , they go down on the mosquito .
The insect had the leg top and carrying capability the inventor were looking for . They were able to create a number of small working model and were working on a young example 40 feet magniloquent . Within its trunk would be the locomotive engine as well as room for a crew of ten men . The head would contain all the dick needed for geographic expedition : drills , cut tools , cranes , etc .
But this was still just a scale mannikin because Luchy and Pini thought big . They believed there was no real practical limit to the size of their exploring simple machine , which would be built of aluminum and blade and run by giant Diesel engines . The release drawing render bread and butter quarters for 2500 humankind , an aircraft rocket launcher and a “ fully fit out ocean ocean liner . ”

The discoverer suggested that it would be “ potential to build a mechanically skillful mosquito big enough to walk through the shallower depths of the ocean , and to be powerful enough to cut through the globe ’s crust to the interior fires . ” Because the inventor were convince that tremendous mineral riches pose beneath the Antarctic ice , this machine would be the idealistic prospector . Several machines might be used for this , working in bicycle-built-for-two to transport mineral and ores overland .
The giant mosquitoes could also be used to explore comeuppance . They ’d be specially dependable for this since they would “ do forth with the necessity of erecting elaborate buildings or detailed fortification against hostile tribes . ” In tropical part , the machines would be outfit with issue tools to allow them to clear a path through jungle .
“ It is only sightly to say , ” concluded one reporter , “ that many scientist are skeptical . ”
